Located just 2 kms out from the city, Akshardham Temple is an architectural masterpiece and the most famous temple in Gandhinagar. The temple was built in 1992 and is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan. 6,000 tonnes of pink sandstones were used to build this 10 storied temple and its 93 sculpted pillars. Constructed by Queen Rudabai in 1499, it was one of the main stopping points for travellers and caravans passing through this trade route. Set behind the Sabarmati river and popular for its Bandhani Sarees, the Craftsman Village in Gandhinagar is visited by hundreds of tourists and shoppers every day.
